Sorry for the spam…

…but without spam, life would be very boring - wouldn’t it?

Anyway, half an hour ago I decided to import my Tumblr blog into my WordPress blog. This would help with my plans to alternate between Tumblr and my WordPress blog for posts and stuff, but something went horribly wrong.

Turns out, I had completely forgotten about my dlvr.it setup which took the RSS feed of my WordPress blog and published the new items to Tumblr. And being a machine, and a web machine at that, it wasn’t smart enough to realize what it was posting was already on the Tumblr blog.

Not only that, but each new post to the Tumblr blog got sent to Twitter and Facebook, causing mayhem and chaos and mad chainsaw-wielding chipmunks to wage war against my awesomeness.

It was a bloody war, but it’s over now, and I’d like to apologize for the little spam epidemic that went on ;)

Here’s a little diagram: Import to LucasBlog > New content on LucasBlog is published on TumbLucas > New content on TumbLucas is published to Twitter and Facebook.

Anyway, it’s all cleaned up.

Enigma Community disables CAPTCHA, sees massive increase in members

forumnews:

This week, The Enigma Community disabled their captcha on the registration page. Almost immediately, a huge amount of new members flooded in, breaking the forum’s record for most registrations per day.

lucasbytegenius, administrator and founder of the site, shared the registration graph with us during the few days the CAPTCHA was disabled:

lucasbytegenius says that it appears the majority of the new members were automated spam bots, but he says he’s encouraged by how much traffic they’re generating:

When I disabled the CAPTCHA, I thought it was a little crazy, but I wanted to experiment and see what would happen. The statistics for the 5 days it was disabled were astounding. I later disabled it as we were getting a bit overwhelmed by spammers, but I’m encouraged by the traffic we’re getting.

Lucas says that while 30-40 spam bots were registering per day, he didn’t see much spam. He credits the IPS Spam Service for taking care of most of the spam bots, though he had to delete a few threads and status updates that got made by the ones who got through.

Despite this amazing boost in members, he doesn’t recommend doing it unless you have an active staff team that’s online 24/7 and need a boost in numbers.
